this post gonna teach you how to tunnel you connection with putty.

putty is a client tool for windows to connect to ssh,telnet, and raw server. Proxy tunneling mean you connect to other host trought another host via ssh connection. another host in this case is your ssh server. by tunneling, you can bypass the gei firewall at school or work place to use restricted program like irc client, p2p software and etc. Besides that, if you are connected to the internet throught lan proxy server like me and it have several bandwidth and stupid connection limit, you can simply bypass it with proxy tunnel. Another advantage of tunneling is you can secure you connection because of it using encryption and message authentication codes. For example if you want to use remote desktop but you are afraid someone might sniff your network and tunnel is a best way to make it more secure.

orait now here is the tutorial how to tunnel,

first thing first, you need putty, go download it at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ make sure you download the right version!!

ok now, you are connected to the internet through router or network hub, you can simple use this command windows command prompt ( click start > run then type cmd )

C:\Documents and Settings\Nova>putty -D 1088 -P 22 your.shell.server.com

make sure you execute putty.exe from directory where you save it at first place!!

after that you will connect to your ssh server and configure you program to use local proxy that is 127.0.0.1 port 1088, this is for sock4 or sock5 only.

and now, you are behind firewall server and you need to tunnel http proxy, here is the way how you can configure you putty manually to tunnel you http proxies.

what you need to do is…

1. save your profile

2. go to proxy setting and then configure your putty to connect trough lan proxy server.

3. next, go tu tunnel menu. Enable localhost X11 forwarding and add source port 7070 and destination is your http proxy, that 123.456.789.1:3128 is just an example. make sure you choose local when do this. Other way is by adding dynamic port, click at dynamic and then add port 1088 it will show D1088 in forwarded ports. This work like 1st method i show above. it only create sock4/sock5 connection using you ssh server as the proxy server. normally i use this to tunnel to irc server. Configure you program to connect to internet and you are good to go.

for linux, you simply use this command

ssh -N -L 1088:your.proxy.server:3128 your.shell.server.com &
