compiling pidgin 2.2.2 from source

for those who been using ubuntu and pidgin as instant messenger, you need to wait for version 2.2.2 since it wont be in repo until next big update. so if you still want to upgrade your pidgin to version 2.2.2 which fix some bug on memory leakage, you can compile it from source.

first, download pidgin 2.2.2 source from http://pidgin.im/download/source/

next, please remove all pidgin 2.2.1. type this at your terminal

$sudo aptitude purge pidgin pidgin-data libpurple0

now, prepare all nescessary files required to compile pidgin 2.2.2.type this at you terminal

$sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install build-essential checkinstall

now install all pidgin dependencies so that you won’t have any error when compiling.

$sudo apt-get build-dep pidgin

orait, now it’s time for compiling part..extract pidgin-2.2.2.tar.bz2

$tar jxvf pidgin-2.2.2.tar.bz2
$cd pidgin-2.2.2/

and now let compile it using this command

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo checkinstall

when finished you can go one step backward
$cd ../
then remove the source folder
$sudo rm -rf pidgin-2.2.2/

note : since we use checkinstall to install this, you can simply remove this version of pidgin by typing
$sudo aptitude remove pidgin

that’s it…good luck on your compiling… :)

update : if your pidgin can’t run due to some missing files please fix it by reinstall libpurple. simply type

$sudo aptitude reinstall libpurple0 libpurple-bin

and if it’s still broken, reinstall pidgin from repo then follow step above. skip removing pidgin, the trick is that we goin to replace old files! if there’s any problem, don’t hesitate to ask
